  • g., Bt cotton, Bt genes
  • Possible applications:
    • Biological and medical research,
    • Production of pharmaceutical drugs,
    • Experimental medicine (e.g. gene therapy),

    • Genetically modified bacteria to produce the protein insulin,
    • To produce biofuels from some GM bacteria, etc.

Science and Technology

Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet Technology

Why in News?

Recently, DRDO has successfully conducted the test of the Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) technology, crucial for the indigenous development of long-range air-to-air missiles.

About Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet Technology:

  • It is a missile propulsion system based on the principle of Ramjet Engine.
  • It uses a solid fuel led air-breathing ramjet engine.
  • Unlike any other solid-propellant rockets, the Ramjet takes up oxygen from the atmosphere during its flight, thereby, being light weight.
  • The missile based on SFDR principle fly at supersonic speeds and has high manoeuvrability.

About Ramjet Technology:

  • It is a form of air-breathing jet engine which uses the vehicle’s forward motion to compress incoming air for combustion without a rotating compressor.
  • However, a major drawback of Ramjet Engine was that it works efficiently at supersonic speeds, but not efficient at
