Giant Leatherback turtle

Why in News?

The proposals for tourism andport development in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have raised worries over the fate ofsome of the importantnesting populations of theGiant Leatherback turtle inIndianOcean.

About Giant Leatherback Turtle:

  • It is the largest of the sevenspecies of sea turtles on theplanet
  • Habitat:
    • All oceans except the Arctic and the Antarctic.
    • They are primarily found in
    • open oceans.

  • In the IndianOcean, they nest only in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the A&N Islands
  • Listed in Schedule I of India’s WildlifeProtection Act (WPA), 1972, thusaccording it the highest legalprotection.
  • IUCN Status: Vulnerable
  • Salient Features:
    • It lacks bony shell, which differentiates it from other sea turtle species.
    • Its shell(carapace) is covered by skin and oily flesh.
  • Threats:
    • intense egg collection from nesting sites.

Vembanad Lake

Why in News?

The steps are underway to demolish the illegally constructed villas on Nediyathuruthu island in Vembanad Lake.

About Vembanad Lake:

  • It is the longest lake in India.
  • Local Names:
    • Punnamada Lake in Kuttanad,
    • Kochi Lake in Kochi.
  • Several small islands are present in the lake, e.g. Vypin, Mulavukad, Vallarpadam, Nediyathuruthu,Willingdon Island.
  • The lake is popular for The Nehru Trophy Boat Race.
  • GoI has included the Vembanad wetland under National Wetlands Conservation Programme.
  • It was included in the list of wetlands of international importance, under the Ramsar Convention for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands in 2002.
  • It is the second largest Ramsar site in India after the Sundarbans of West Bengal.

FASTags

Why in News?

As per recent NHAI orders, from Feb. 16,2021,the vehicleswithout valid and functionalFASTag will have to pay feeequivalent to twicethe fee applicable to that category of vehicle.

About FASTag:

  • A FASTag device employs Radio Frequency Identificationor RFID technology for payments directly from the prepaid wallet or savings account linked to it.
  • It is affixed on the windscreen, to enable the vehicles to drive through toll plazas without stopping.
  • It is has unlimited validity, and can be recharged as and when required.
  • FASTag payment method is a part of the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme.
  • The National Payments Corporation of India or NPCI collects the payments.

Related Information:

  • RFID usesradio waves to read and capture the information stored on the tag attached to any object.
  • A RFID enabled tag can be read from up to several feet away.

Also, it doesn’t need to be within direct line-of-sight of the reader to be tracked

National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT)

Why in News?

The NCLATrecently ordered the appointment of a Central governmentnominated administrator forthe Delhi Gymkhana Club after finding some irregularities in its management.

About NCLAT:

  • The NCLAT was constituted under Companies Act, 2013.
  • It acts as appellate tribunal:
    • against the orders of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
    • against the orders passed by NCLT(s) under Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 (IBC).
    • against the orders passed by Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India under IBC.
    • against any direction or decision made by Competition Commission of India (CCI).
  • The chairperson and members of the NCLATis appointed in consultation with the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
  • Appeals against decisions of NCLAT lies with Supreme Court of India.

  • NCLTor National Company Law Tribunal is a quasi-judicial body which adjudicates issues pertaining to the companies in the country.

Wholesale Price Index:

Why in News?

Inflation in wholesale prices increased to 2.03% in January, after easing to 1.2% inDecember 2020.

About WPI:

  • WPI represents the price of a basket of wholesale goods.
  • It focuses on the price of goods that are traded between companies at a non-consumer stage.
  • The objective of WPI is – to monitor the price drifts that reflect the demand and supply in manufacturing, construction and industry.
  • WPI based inflation rates are released by the Office of Economic Advisor under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • Base Year of WPI: 2011-12
  • Commodities covered under WPI:Manufacturing inputs and intermediate goods like minerals, machinery basic metals, etc.
  • WPI, unlike Consumer Price Index, does not capture changes in the prices of services.

Why in News?

‘Transforming Skilling through Strategic Partnerships under SANKALP’ event was organised recently.

About SANKALP:

  • The scheme aims to strengthen the district skill administration and the District Skill Committees (DSCs).
  • Assistance by World Bank.
  • It is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS).
  • It strives to further the mandate of the National Skill Development Mission (NSDM).
  • It is under Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
