Altruism makes a society more virtuous by inspiring people to contribute more in everyday life to other people in need. Life of Kailsash Satyarthi, Mother Teresa has inspired people in world to become better in everyday life to people who need help.
Fraternity and love is established as a value in society and helps people become happier and satisfied in otherwise stressed life routines. E.g., charities by wealthy individuals such as Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is an example of altruistic value promoting common good to make society a better place for the vulnerable sections
Role of education: –
No one could have said it better than Gandhiji that “education should be for head, hand and heart”. Education should not only teach art of earning living, solving problems but should also teach to be kind and humane in daily life.
One of the primary aims of education is also character building. Altruism as a value emerges from such strength of character itself where the individual thinks not just about self needs but also the needs of others.
The 2nd ARC as well identifies selflessness as an essential value for public service which derives from the larger value of altruism.
In schools, we come across students from less affluent sections also and learn their problems. It is through education that we learn about lives of kalam, Mandela and other great leaders. Their works of altruism acts as inspiration and leaves an imprint on the minds of children at an early age to follow in their shoes.
Education also teaches us to rise above the parochial concerns of ourselves and our families. Earning a good livelihood is an act of promoting the self- interest via one’s own ability. But to live in a society one also needs to be aware of other’s interests.
Altruism is of great importance in a society such as India where we see dire income inequalities as highlighted by various Oxfam reports.
To conclude, livelihood is to have a good life for us, altruism is one value which teaches us to live for others as well
