About Sundarbans:
  • The Sundarbans a UNESCO World Heritage Site and It got its name from the mangrove plant known as Sundari (Heritiera Minor).
  • Sundarbans are a part of the world’s largest delta, formed by the large rivers Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna, Situated on the lower end of Gangetic West Bengal.
  • The Sundarbans is the huge single block of tidal, halophytic mangrove forests in the world.
  • Apart from being a unique huge mangrove eco-system of the world, the Sundarbans has the world’s largest deltaic mangrove forests and is also home to one of India’s most iconic wildlife species – the Royal Bengal Tiger.
  • It is also the world’s largest estuarine forest crossed by many creeks and tributaries, intersected by a network of tidal waterways, islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests and mudflats.
  • The Sundarbans also serves as a protective barrier for the inhabitants in and around Kolkata against the major floods that result from the cyclones.

About Terek sandpiper:

  • The Terek sandpiper species is distributed in Finland, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and in the coastal regions of southeast Africa, Madagascar, Arabian Peninsula, Indian subcontinent, southeast Asia and Australia.
  • The Terek sandpiper species have very low forest dependence.
  • They normally occur in altitudes (height) between 0 to 100 meters. The habitats of these species include salt production ponds.
  • The diet of these Terek sandpiper species consists mainly of invertebrates. Insects, larval insects, beetles, flies, crustaceans, arachnids and seeds are their primary food.
  • Generally, the breeding season of these Terek sandpiper species is from May to August. They are breed in small colonies.
  • IUCN status listing: Least Concern
