The above quote is given by Plato. According to Plato, one can measure a man when he is endowed with power.
Man can be measured with the parameters like his values, attitude and behavior when he has a great power with
A person with power can do both – good or bad things. One can show compassion, empathy, integrity etc on the
other hand one can imitate ruthlessness, cruelty, corrupt attitude, etc.
Following examples shows how one can measure a man who has power and a man who is without power:
Indira Gandhi: having a power of being Prime Minister, she imposed emergency in a country putting
numerous leaders in jail and suppressing the freedom of speech and expression. This act of emergency
postponed the general elections and also disrupted the harmony and order in the country. This shows the
power can make a person to misuse it and dominate. Here the person becomes apathetic.
Hit and run case of Salman Khan: the victim who was died due to Salman’s rash driving deserved the
justice. However, the victim being the vulnerable and powerless didn’t influence the Salman and his career
much. Victim’s death is almost gone in vain. Infact not may know the victims name. Still the relatives who
were going by the due process of law, now felling helpless.
APJ Abdul Kalam: This is one of the best examples of the most humble person with power. He was a blend
value of compassion, empathy, emotional intelligence, humility etc. For ex. Once during an event when Mr.
Kalam was the then President, he refused to sit on the chair which was designated for him just because the
chair was larger in size than the others.
The above examples show that the imitation of true nature of the person can be seen if he has a power with him.
To be down to earth despite of being powerful, one can follow Gandhiji’s Talisman which says: “I will give you a
talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test.
Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man [woman] whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the
step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him [her].”
