Explanation (d) The Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education began its life in 1957, in the form of Lakshmibai College of Physical Education (LCPE), in memory of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, as a college of physical education, affiliated to Vikram University, Ujjain. In 1964, the college was shifted to Jiwaji University. In 1973, the college was renamed to Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE) and nine years later, in 1982, was upgraded as an autonomous college. A further name change occurred in 1995, to Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education. In 2000, the pres ent name of Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education was accepted when it was declared, by the Government of India as a deemed university, handing over the affairs to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, which is funding all its activities. In 2017, it was re named as Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education after a UGC’s order to not use “University” word in deemed university’s name.
COMMENT -When independent India celebrated the centenary Year of the first freedom struggle of 1857, it was decided that a physical education college would be established in Gwalior in the memory of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi.
- Raja Pancham Singh of Pahargarh, the first Mayor of Gwalior, played a very important role in the establishment of this institution. He was a good shooter himself. In the era of princely states, where there was a field of horse racing and polo, this institution started. India’s best physical educationist Prof. P M Joseph was appointed the first principal of this institution. In the field of physical education, P M Joseph, is the only who was awarded the Padma Shri Award.
Special: There are currently seven departments in Lakshmibai National Physical Education University. The Teacher Education Department has a four-Year Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.ed.) and a two-Year Master of Physical Education (M. P. Ed) course. In 1980, the then college reached yet another milestone and became the first institution in India to have offered one-Year pro gramme of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Physical Education. Ph.D. programme in Physical Education was started in 1998. Students are also admitted for various certificate/diploma/PG Diploma courses in different disci plines of Physical Education and Sports. The Department of Sports Management and Sports Journalism is a rela tively new department. Keeping in mind the expanding field of sports journalism in newspapers, radio, television and web mediums, a one-Year PG diploma course in sports journalism is being run here to prepare trained sports journalists and one such course also operates in the field of sports management.
