The First Solar Power Plant on Indian Railways

The Cabinet Committee on Security meets to discuss the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

On February 24, 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over a critical Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting to discuss the crisis sparked by Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.

Overview:

This plant will provide direct power to Indian Railways’ traction systems.
This plant was built after the Indian Railways decided to become self-sufficient in terms of electricity generation and planned to solarize railway stations by utilising vacant land for various Renewable Energy (RE) projects.

This is the first Solar Power Plant on the Indian Railways network to directly feed Traction Power.
Bina’s Solar Plant has a total area of more than ten acres. At the Solar Plant, 5800 solar modules are installed on 145 modular mounting structures supported by 1015 pile foundations.

The electricity generated by this plant will be provided free of charge to the Indian Railways.

This Solar Plant is expected to generate 8 MU of electricity per year.

This Solar Plant will save 2,160 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

The Plan to Use Solar Energy to Power Railway Stations

Solar power will be used to power approximately 7,000 railway stations across the country in the medium term, according to the Union Budget 2017-18.
In the budget, the government stated that 2,000 railway stations would be built as part of its 1000-Megawatt solar project.

The use of solar power will help Indian Railways achieve its goal of becoming a Net Zero Carbon Emission Rail Network. To that end, the Indian Railways had devised plans to build 20 GW of solar power plants on its vacant land by 2030.
