Ranthambore Tiger Sanctuary

Why in News?

The increasing tiger population at Ranthambore Tiger Sanctuary has become a concern for the Rajasthan government due to increased territorial fights and man-animal conflictresulting from the space crunch.

About Ranthambore Tiger Sanctuary:

  • Ranthambore Tiger Sanctuary lies at the junction of the Aravali and Vindhya hill ranges.
    • It comprises of
      • Ranthambore National Park
      • Sawai Mansingh Sanctuary
      • Kailadevi Sanctuaries.
    • The associatedRanthambore fort, is strategically located on a 700 feet tall hill within the park and is believed to be built in 944 AD by a Chauhan ruler.
    • The region represents the north-western limit of the Bengal tiger’s distribution range.
    • Associated Waterbody: Chambal and its tributaries.

    Vegetation:

    • Grasslands, and dense forests along the seasonal streams.
    • Mainly tropical dry deciduous forest with dhak tree,capable of withstanding long periods of drought, being the most common.

    Wildlife:

    • Tigers are at the apex of the food chain in mammals.
    • Other animals includeleopards, striped hyenas, common or hanuman langurs, rhesus macaques, jackals, jungle cats, caracals, blackbuck, and chinkara, etc.
    • The park is also rich in birds.

    Hubble Space Telescope

    Why in News?

    NASA reportedly was able to successfully switch to a backup computer on the Hubble observatory following weeks of computer glitches.

    About Hubble Telescope:

    • It is a space-based telescope launched and serviced by NASA.
    • It was launched in 1990.
    • It is the only telescope designed to be serviced in space by astronauts there itself.
    • It has also given the evidence to infer expansion of universe.
    • It can see across the entire optical spectrum from infrared to ultraviolet with this telescope.
    • It makes one orbit around Earth every 95 minutes.

        Adjournment motion

        Why in News?

        Recently, a political party has decided to move an Adjournment Motion in the Lok Sabha against the government on the three controversial farm laws.

        About Adjournment Motion:

        • Itcan be introduced only in Lok Sabha to draw the attention of the House to a definite matter of urgent public importance.
        • It involves an element of censure against the government of the day, hence Rajya Sabha is not permitted to use this device.
        • It is considered as an extraordinary devicesince it interrupts the normal business of the house. It needs support ofminimum 50 members to be admitted.
        • The discussion on this motion should last for not less than2.5 hours.
        • However, the right to move Adjournmentmotion is subject to the following restrictions. i.e. it should:
          • Raise a matter which is definite, factual, urgent and of public importance.
          • Not cover more than one matter.
          • Be restricted to a specific matter of recent occurrence.
          • Not raise a question of privilege.
          • Not revive discussion on a matter that has been discussed in the same session.
          • Not deal with any matter that is under adjudication of court.
          • Not raise any question that can be raised on a distinct motion.

        Governmental Initiatives

        UDAN Scheme

        Why in News?

        GoI has recently announced new flights under the UDAN scheme to connect small cities with the metros to utilise less used airports in the country and offer affordable flights.

        About UDAN 4.1:

        • It focusses on connecting smaller airports, special helicopter services and seaplane routes.
        • In consonance with Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, it will also contribute to Sagarmala Seaplane Services
        • Seaplane route between Kevadia and Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad is an example of Sagarmala Seaplane Services project.

        About UDAN Scheme:

        • UdeDesh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme was launched to boostregional connectivity in 2016.
        • It is under the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
        • It aims to create affordable but economically viable and profitable flights on regional routes so that flying is within reach of common man even in small towns.
        • The scheme also envisages creating connectivity servicesin theun-served and underserved airports of the country by the revival of existing air-strips and airports.
        • Financial incentives are to be provided from the Centre, state governments and airport operators to selected airlines to encourage operations from such airports,


        • and also to keep airfares affordable.

        UMANGApp

        Why in News?

        Recently,MEITY has enabled map services in UMANG App.

        • It will enable citizens to find government facilities nearest to their location, like mandis, blood banks, etc.

        About UMANG App:

        • The UMANG mobile app is a GoI all-in-one unified, secure, multi-channel, multi-lingual, multi-service mobile app.
        • It provides access to high impact services of various organizations provided by both Centre and States. Presently it has more than 2000 services.
        • It aims tofast-track mobile governance in India.
        • It enables ‘Ease of Living’ for citizens by providing easy access to government services like
          • Healthcare,
          • Finance,
          • Education,
          • Housing,
          • Energy,
          • Agriculture,
          • Transport, etc.
        • The key partners of UMANG are EPFO, Direct Benefit Transfer scheme departments, Employee State Insurance Corporation, various ministries, and Staff Selection Commission (SSC).
        • UMANG was developed by the National e-Governance Division, Ministry of Electronics & IT.
        • It is a ‘Digital India’ initiative.
